What counts as evidence of understanding?

Look at the response, the reasoning, and the help behind it before choosing what to teach next.

Three learners finish the same activity with the same correct answer. One explains the relationship independently. One selects the answer after a hint gives away the key idea. One follows a partner’s explanation. The completion record is similar; the educational evidence is different.

A useful evidence record helps a teacher decide what to do next. It does not need to collect everything a learner does. It needs a clear connection to the objective and enough context to make the response interpretable. The following examples are invented to show how that judgment can work.

1. Start with the question you need to answer

Suppose the objective is to explain why two thirds and four sixths represent the same share of an equal-sized whole. A score tells you whether the chosen answer matched an expected answer. It does not, on its own, tell you whether the learner understands the relationship between the pieces.

Choose an evidence task that serves the objective: ask the learner to mark both fractions on equal-sized strips and explain what changed. If your objective were only to recognize familiar fraction notation, a different task might be appropriate. Evidence is useful in relation to a question, not because one format is always superior.

2. Keep a small, meaningful context record

For a single response, note the objective, the task version, the response, the date, and relevant help. Record a group contribution as a group contribution until there is a reason to attribute it to an individual. Keep a later independent response separate from the supported attempt that came before it.

Context should explain the learning situation, not become a surveillance exercise. You do not need a psychological label, a public ranking, or an attention score to decide whether to revisit a fraction representation. Keep the learner’s work private and share it only with people who need it for an authorized purpose.

  • What was the learner asked to show?
  • What did they actually say, choose, or make?
  • What answer-relevant help did they use?
  • What interpretation is justified—and what is still uncertain?

3. Read equal answers differently when the evidence differs

Response A says: ‘Each third has been split into two equal parts. The whole is still the same size.’ That gives the teacher a reason to try a new representation. It does not settle every future judgment about fractions, but it is more informative than a correct selection alone.

Response B chooses four sixths after a hint says to double both numbers. The correct answer shows the learner can use that support. The next task should ask for an explanation without the answer-revealing hint. Response C repeats a partner’s words. Invite a brief individual explanation before making an individual judgment.

4. Make feedback lead somewhere

A comment such as ‘look again’ may leave a learner unsure what to do. A more focused response identifies the relationship to inspect: ‘Place the shaded strips on top of each other. What stays the same when each piece is divided again?’ The teacher can then listen to the explanation rather than simply request another click.

Plan time for the learner to use the feedback. That might mean revising an explanation, trying a new example, or asking a clarifying question. If the next task is unchanged and the same answer remains visible, a correct retry may show successful copying. It should not silently replace the earlier response as evidence of independent understanding.

5. Make a provisional judgment, then look again

An evidence-informed next step can be modest: ‘Ask for an individual explanation with a new strip diagram.’ It does not always need a new mastery label or a large intervention plan. When the record is incomplete, state what you do not yet know and choose the smallest useful check.

Over time, look for relevant evidence across tasks and contexts, with the level of help visible. A later answer can change your view; so can a teacher observation that explains an apparent inconsistency. Keep the decision revisable. ‘Needs another check’ is often a more responsible description than a confident label built from a single response.

6. Turn the evidence into a clear next action

For a colleague, write a short note that separates observation and interpretation: ‘The learner matched both shaded amounts but described the numerator as the size of each part. I will revisit what the numerator counts, then check a fresh example.’ The note explains why the next step was chosen.

For a family, use everyday language: ‘We are working on different ways to show the same share. Your child can match familiar examples with support. At home, ask them to compare equal-sized pieces and explain what they notice.’ Avoid presenting one percentage as a complete account of learning, and keep the school’s teaching judgment in view.
