The Great Fraction Feast

One feast. Many ways to share it fairly.

The learner experience

A little curiosity. A lasting understanding.

Help Mina and Leo prepare a fair picnic. Divide a sandwich into equal shares, predict whether one half matches two quarters, and watch the pieces fit. Pack half a pizza, match ribbon lengths, and explain why smaller pieces do not mean more food. Optional paper-folding and different-sized sandwich discoveries extend the story.

Imagine this moment

Two real-looking quarter-sandwich pieces fit exactly over one half; four eighths then fill the same footprint.

Learning & evidence

The learning objective

Generate equivalent fractions and explain why the quantity stays the same when the same whole is partitioned differently.

What understanding looks like

Initial prediction and reasoning, selected pizza slices, a ribbon construction and explanation, hints and retries, and a final teach-back. Download the session evidence for teacher review.

Adaptation

Different starting points. A shared objective.

Replay narrated demonstrations, use still pictures or optional paper-folding support, then extend two thirds from sixths to ninths. Explore how different-sized wholes affect physical servings.
